CHAPTER ELEVEN

The Hood stepped into the room. I watched him pick up one of the tables, raise it over his head, and then hurl it into a crowd of people.

Everywhere, women in dresses and men in tuxes ran, screaming.

The Hood raised his arms over his head and let out an animalistic growl. Then he picked up another table. He threw that one against the floor.

Cecily was looking all over the place. She was probably worried for Callum. He’d been gone getting drinks for an awfully long time, after all.

I was looking around too. But I was looking for Finn. I didn’t see him anywhere. That probably meant that he was turning into Steel, and he would be there shortly.

One piercing shriek caught my attention. I looked to see the source of it. A woman in a blue dress was caught underneath one of the tables. She tried to crawl out, but The Hood was in her way, blocking the path. She tried the other direction, but she was caught against the wall.

The Hood picked up the table that had been sheltering the woman. He tossed it against the wall. It splintered, raining down shards of wood everywhere.

The woman screamed again. She tried to get to her feet.

But The Hood stopped her. He reached down for her, grabbing her by the throat. He picked her up, holding her face-to-face with him. Her feet dangled. The Hood was very tall—possibly even taller than Steel.

I was worried. Where was Steel? The Hood could strangle that woman to death right in front of all of us.

As if answering my thoughts, Steel surged in from behind the Hood. He seized the Hood by his shoulder and turned him.

The Hood was so startled that he dropped the woman.

Steel darted forward and caught her. He set her on her feet, and had her walk off, away from the fight.

While his back was turned, the Hood hurled another table at Steel.

The table hit Steel in the back, propelling him forwards. Steel hit the ground with a thud.

There was an audible gasp from the bystanders. I started to chew on my fingernail.

Cecily was still looking around, obviously still trying to locate Callum.

If I wasn’t so worried about Steel, maybe I would have helped her find him.

Steel got to his feet. He picked up a table himself. He threw it at the Hood.

The table hit the Hood in the head. The Hood fell to the ground.

Steel moved in.

The Hood pushed the table aside, rising from the wreckage easily. He got to his feet, and he punched Steel in the face. Twice. One fist, then the other.

Steel absorbed the impact. He responded with a roundhouse kick to The Hood.

It caught The Hood in the chest. He backed up a step. Then he rallied and charged Steel.

Steel went down.

The Hood was on top of Steel, straddling him. He began hitting Steel over and over. The blows landed on Steel’s face, on his chest, on his stomach. The Hood landed one punch on Steel’s nose.
